Cam's Wrap on Cleveland
On Monday I flew to Cleveland for the Dew Tour. This is the second stop of the series and I was pretty excited to get there and have a ride. I checked out the jumps the next morning and it was a different set up than most of the other stops. It started with a little mellow kicker onto a landing that went to a 90 degree right turn with a transfer jump into a left turn berm that was down hill and went over a roller. Then it was a right hip, probably the biggest jump on the course. After the hip there was a long and low jump then the last set. The jumps werent very big at all, but they were so much fun and I was stoked on the different set up.
Waking up on Wednesday morning, I went to the local Children's Hospital with Anthony Napolitan to visit some of the sick kids and hook them up with some free stuff and chat about BMX. We spent a good couple of hours at the hospital and chatted to about 15 kids. All of them were pumped on the visit and it was a lot of fun.
After the hospital visit I went and had a ride in practice. Because I was sitting top 3 in the end of year results I was lucky enough not to have to ride prelims - I was straight into the finals so I did get a lot of time to ride the jumps. It was so hot and humid! Im not used to any humidity, so I was sweating like crazy and got worn out quicker, so my plan for practice was to just throw out all my stuff straight away so I could sit down and chill. I threw out all my big tricks in that practice and was actually pretty stoked that it worked out on such small jumps.
After practice I watched the prelims. A lot of guys threw down some huge runs. I was stoked to see Ryan Guettler out there killing it - throwing down some sweet 720’s. Another standout for me was Nate Berkheimer - he rode amazing in both runs. He was back-flipping off the drop off kicker - it was such a gnarly flip, but he made it look so easy. He qualified in 2nd place behind Corey Bohan.
Before I knew it, it was Friday and finals day. Before the gates opened, I got down to the Mongoose booth early and spent some time down there with kids from the Boys and Girls club. I talked to them about BMX and growing up in Australia, then all about safety gear and what we use to help prevent getting as hurt. After that I took them to the on-dirt demo course and showed them how to ride the course. All the kids padded up with elbow, knee pads, helmet and hopped on a bike and gave it a go. A few of them were scared to start with, but at the end everyone was having a blast and enjoyed the time on the bike.
After spending a few hours out in the sun doing that I went back to the hotel and relaxed until practice.
We went down to the contest and I started riding practice. Before I knew it, practice was shut down and it was contest time. I had 3 runs that I wanted to do in my head. The first run was going to be a in-the-bank run. A safe run that should hopefully get me a good score so I could send it in my next 2 runs. It consisted of a flip whip on the first hip, truck driver to xup on the long and low and then a front flip on the last set.
I managed to pull off that run and lock it in the bank, so I was a lot more relaxed going into my second run. My second run consisted of a backflip barspin to tailwhip on the first hip, a double barspin on the long and low and a suicide double truck driver on the last set. A lot of people we doing 360 tailwhips, and I knew people would be expecting that from me, so I thought the double truck would mix it up. I couldn’t have been happier with my second run. I pulled everything clean and was stoked to get to the end with wheel side down. Now that I had 2 solid runs in, I thought I'd just mix up both runs and try get a higher score. I flip-bar-to-whipped the first hip, then straight into a 360 on the long and low then a fronty on the last set. I was so stoked to pull that run too because it was real tight from the first hip into the long and low.
At the end of the contest, which was gnarly as with Luke Parslow pulling a double backflip, and Ryan Guettler doing a 1080 on the first hip, I managed to finish in 1st place.
As I was was getting ready to leave the contest I saw one of the girls that I had visited in the hospital the other day. It was awesome to see her there because I told her that I would be looking out for her. I went and had a yarn to her and she was so pumped on the contest. I want to thank her for coming out and showing her support.
After the contest we celebrated with a round of pepsi or two, and some cheese pizza! Perfect end to a good day.
Waking up early on Saturday morning, we hung out and about until 2pm when I had an autograph signing at the Mongoose tent and following that I rounded up all the lads, and gals, Michelle and Ashley and we went and grabbed a stack of Lavs Lab cards and walked around the Dew Tour venue and handed out a bunch of stuff for Lav's 6pm performance. Not many people knew that TJ Lavin was performing live on stage, but we managed to get a pretty decent crowd there to watch him perform. He was doing 8 songs total, one of them being the single “Solider” that is for Stephen Murray. Lavs performed absolutely amazingly and the people that had never seen or heard his stuff before were blown away by his talent. It was great to see Stephen Murray there also up on the stage. Lavs was performing with Tash from the Alkoholics, and DJ E-Swift. Put those 3 guys together and it equals one amazing concert. If you havent heard any of his stuff make sure you visit www. myspace. com/lavslab and check it out, as well as buy the single Solider, and help raise money for Stephen Murray.
After Lavs’ Concert, we went over to the vert ramp to watch that contest, but it started to rain, so we decided to go back to the hotel and then make our way to Ray's Mountain Bike Park. I had never been to the park before but I heard that it was awesome, so I was pretty pumped to go check it out. Upon arrival I was blown away. It was a huge warehouse full of ramps. But not like your everyday skate park - this place was specific lines all flowing in the one direction. So no one was in your way, it was just everyone training each other. I spent a good 3 hours there and didn’t touch every ramp in the place. It is definitely one of the best places I have ever ridden. Behind every turn there is a whole other area that I hadn't seen before and not only is it a dope place to ride, but an awesome place to just chill and hang out, plus Ray himself is a super nice guy. So I wanna say thanks to him for letting us all come and ride and also Jenny from Mongoose for organising the session.
After a busy week, it was time to go home and get some relax time on the couch.
Word.

AST Dew Tour, Cleveland, Ohio
Cam takes out BMX Dirt in Cleveland.
At the second stop of the AST Dew Tour in Cleveland on Friday, Cameron took to the extra challenge that the course presented, and gave it his best shot - and it paid off.
Cam took out 1st place, with fellow Aussie Ryan Guettler 2nd, and Ryan Nyquist 3rd.
Check back for Cam's report of the event.
Cam has had a very busy week in Cleveland, with various media appointments, in addition to being invited to pitch the first ball in the Cleveland Indians baseball match. Local supporters were hoping that Cam's first ball might turn around a 10 game losing streak - and it did - nice work Cam!
Later in the week Cam visited sick kids at the Children's Hospital with fellow BMX'er Anthony Napolitan.
